Valencia, Spain – March 23, 2026
Smart Freight Centre (SFC) and PragmaCharge announce the launch of the Iberia Zero-Emission Road Freight Consortium, an initiative designed to accelerate the electrification of heavy-duty road freight across Spain and Portugal.
Road freight is a critical backbone of the Iberian economy, supporting industrial activity, ports, and cross-border trade, while also representing a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. The new consortium is bringing together global shippers, logistics service providers, carriers, and industry solution providers to collaborate on the deployment of battery-electric trucks (BETs) and charging infrastructure at scale across key freight corridors in Iberia.
Building on SFC and PragmaCharge’s ongoing work in Europe, including the Poland–Germany Zero-Emission Freight Corridor, the initiative applies a proven, data-driven approach to identify and prioritize freight flows that are suitable for electrification. In Poland, aggregated shipment data is being used to develop comprehensive electrification plans covering hundreds of millions of kilometers of annual trucking activity, demonstrating the potential for significant emissions reductions at scale.
“Decarbonizing Road freight requires more than ambition - it requires the right partners, the right data, and a proven model for collaboration. The “Iberia Zero-Emission Road Freight Consortium” brings all three together. Spain and Portugal are strategically positioned for the next wave of European road freight electrification. Smart Freight Centre and PragmaCharge are committed to ensuring that the lessons from our joint corridor projects translate into real, scalable deployment on the Iberian Peninsula. We look forward to this initiative that brings together the Iberian ecosystem and will build impact.” – Christoph Wolff, CEO, Smart Freight Centre
The Iberia consortium will use anonymized shipment data from participating companies to develop a coordinated fleet electrification plan, aligning freight demand with charging infrastructure deployment and enabling more efficient and cost-effective operations for carriers. By aggregating demand across multiple shippers and creating shared access to charging infrastructure, the initiative will reduce upfront costs, improve vehicle utilization, and support the development of scalable, commercially viable electric trucking solutions.
PragmaCharge will provide end-to-end fleet electrification and charging solutions, including electric truck renting with associated repair and maintenance direct from OEMs, access to PragmaCharge’s charging network, and a software platform to that maximizes e-truck deployment at or better than diesel Total Cost of Ownership. Its integrated electric-Trucking-as-a-Service (eTaaS) and Charging-as-a-Service (CaaS) models are designed to lower barriers to entry for carriers and accelerate the transition to zero-emission fleets.
“The consortium shall deliver competitive TCO for carriers in Spain by maximizing electrifiable routes and reducing the empty backhaul runs by leveraging its data-led charging demand aggregation model, combined with relatively lower all-in cost of electricity in Spain. Being among the top three markets for road freight in Europe, Spain is a critical market to reduce tail-pipe emissions. We are excited to work with local partners to enable practical, large-scale deployment of electric trucks and the build out of a robust charging network across Spain and Portugal.” – Anil Srivastava, CEO, PragmaCharge
Through this collaborative, corridor-based approach, the consortium unlocks a scalable pipeline of zero-emission freight deployments across Iberia, supporting national climate and energy objectives while strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of the Iberian logistics sector.
Organizations across the freight ecosystem are invited to join the Iberia Zero-Emission Road Freight Consortium and contribute to the next phase of zero-emission freight deployment in the region.
